Furniture repair and restoration in Westminster

Loose joints, cracked tops, broken legs and missing parts, repaired in any kind of wood, for homes and for businesses.

What actually breaks in a piece of furniture

Most furniture does not wear out, it comes apart. Old hide glue lets go and a chair starts to rack. A table leg loosens in its joint, a drawer bottom drops, a tabletop splits along a glue line or across the grain after a few dry winters.

Then there are the hard knocks: a broken leg from a move, a snapped rail, a chipped corner, or a part that is simply gone. Scratches and cracks look alarming and are often the easiest thing on the list to put right.

Whether it's a small or big furniture repair, David looks at it first and tells you plainly which kind of job it is.

How a repair goes at the bench

Loose work gets taken apart rather than glued in place. Old glue is cleaned out of the joint, surfaces are fitted so they close up tight, and the piece is reglued and clamped square. A repair made on a joint that has not been cleaned just fails again.

Cracks and splits are opened up, glued and filled so they stop moving. When a part is missing, a new one is cut in matching wood and shaped to follow the original, so it sits in the piece instead of announcing itself. Stripping and refinishing can follow once the structure is sound, and the repaired area is blended into the finish.

The shop at 37 West George Street is set up for this every day, and you don't pay until you're satisfied.

Why restore it instead of replacing it

Solid wood furniture from decades ago is usually built better than what is on a showroom floor now, so the question is rarely whether the piece can be saved. It is almost always yes. T-n-T does residential and commercial furniture repair and restoration in any kind of wood.

An antique keeps its value when it is repaired with care and loses it when it is replaced or over-restored. We'll get back the beauty of your antique furniture at affordable prices, and the piece stays in the family room it belongs in.
